Since the recognition of asbestos as a
human carcinogen and its consequent regulation by the USEPA
and OSHA in the early 1970’s, there has been a need
for qualified asbestos abatement contractors to perform remediation
of this deadly product. Because of its unique properties for
heat, fire and chemical resistance, asbestos was utilized
in building materials including spray applied fireproofing,
thermal insulation and flooring materials. Asbestos becomes
an environmental health issue when it is disturbed from its
substrate and made friable. In addition, over time, the matrix
that binds the asbestos fibers can break down allowing the
fibers to be released into the air. It is for these reasons
that professional remediation is required when disturbance
or replacement of asbestos containing materials is required.
